G3Data Logging Perfected

Utilizing the old data log files was difficult because the information was lacking. Oh there were plenty of temperatures all right, but without parameters like altitude, and airspeed some error prone assumptions had to be made to put all the pieces together.

The new G3 solves that problem. It incorporates not only its own measured data but data from the TAS-1000 air-data system and the GPS. Adding ambient data to the file facilitates meaningful comparisons of one flight to another. Another key benefit of these extensive data files will be in processing them to create airplane specific performance charts.

Unlimited Storage for Free

When we introduced the GEM 610 years ago 32 Kbytes was the largest available non-volatile memory chip. If ordinary techniques were used this is scarcely enough storage for an hour-long flight. Far from the 50-hour goal at first it seemed an insurmountable limitation.

Packing the instrument with dozens of expensive chips was impractical. A custom data compaction algorithm was developed that would pack more data in a small memory chip and shorten transmit time over the infrared interface.

Luckily to day none of this matters. Fueled by the digital camera revolution flash memory is so cheap it may as well be free.

We chose the SD card for its widespread availability and low cost.

Fortunately the card is small enough fit in the tiny space below the display.

The card has a Windows compatible file system with Excel compatible files so you can read it without any special software. The cards have huge capacity, large enough to store engines entire life history.

File system screen

The file system screen is used for displaying and handling windows format files on the SD card. Files are created directly in CSV format (comma separated values) for direct importation in Excel.

The user may scroll the screen to highlight a given file or subdirectory with the lower knob. Pushing the button will open the highlighted subdirectory or the highlighted file. The top entry in each screen returns up one directory level.

Logging of engine temperature data on a routine basis allows the creation of a complete engine-operation history, a detailed record documenting each hour of an engine's life.

Data-logging with the G3 provides the benefits of long-term trend monitoring through a standardized personal computer interface. The G3 data-log system makes it easy to retrieve log data from all flights.

The G3 automatically records parameters during every flight. Each flight's data is stored in an individual log file on the SD Card. Every file has an identification header containing the date, time, aircraft- registration and data log configuration.

All data is sampled and recorded every one second of flight data allows up to infinite hours of flight log to be stored on on the SD Card.

Data acquired with the G3 can be viewed directly in raw form, or imported into spreadsheet and database programs for graphical analysis.

Enable the pilot/user to mark an event in the log file.

If during a flight the pilot notices something unusual, maybe a drop in one of the readings, he may want to closely examine the log file later.

In order to make it easy for him to find the entry in file we need to provide a means for him to mark or tag a record in the file.

Implementation: In order to mark the event the user simply presses and holds the top button.

The screen momentarily pauses and increments and displays a number assigned to this event.

The first press generates a ‘1’, the fifteenth press generates a ‘15’ etc.

By calling the routine from the main scheduler we can have it so that this behavior will work without modification for all screens in the scheduler, even for future screens that get added.
